About the Ph.D. in Social Work
North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (NCA&T) and the University of North Carolina Greensboro (UNCG) offer a Joint Ph.D. in social work.
Mission
To prepare doctoral students to engage in scholarship to eliminate social, economic, environmental, and health disparities, with a focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Grounded in two richly historic universities
One a historically Black college or university (NCA&T) and the other the historical women’s college of the University of North Carolina system, the Ph.D. program is built on the cornerstones of diversity, multicultural responsiveness, and community engagement.
Students in the program receive the benefits and privileges of both campuses, and the degree includes the seals and official signatures from both universities.
Encouraged to Pursue Research
The Ph.D. curriculum encourages students to explore a range of research methods and approaches including:
- quantitative (e.g., survey research, secondary data analysis),
- qualitative (e.g., interviews, phenomenological inquiry),
- mixed methods,
- and community-engaged approaches.
We encourage students to use electives to explore other areas or a specialization in a particular area. Using the practitioner/scholar model, the Ph.D. program encourages students to prepare for both academic and non-academic careers.
