Center for New North Carolinians - field placement

What do you like about your field placement?

What I like about working at the Center of New North Carolinians (CNNC) is that it exposes me to different cultures, languages, and ways of living that I have never explored before. It allows me to be a resource for families who need assistance and gives me an opportunity to learn each day I intern there.

What have you learned being a part of this field placement?

What I have learned so far as being a part of CNNC is how privileged I am. I never realized that English being my first language gives me leverage over many things in life. The agency is helping me be culturally competent and appreciate the ethnic and cultural backgrounds I come in contact with.

What do you like about the connections between fieldwork and coursework?

I am more of a hands-on learner, therefore, this internship allows me to see the content which we are learning in class in live action. It teaches me how to act in certain situations and has truly opened my mind to a new way of thinking.

What else would you like prospective students to know about our program?

This program has brought me out of my shell, it teaches me new things that I have not learned before and helps me change my way of thinking about previously fixed views. It helps me be a resource and advocate for those who are not able to and who just don’t know where to start. I am only a few weeks into the program but have already challenged the people in my personal life who are important to me. I know better and want to teach them as well! Bringing people into a conversation rather than calling them out has been the change I need.
