M.S.W. Alumni Make Impact Following Hurricane Helene

When Hurricane Helene struck the North Carolina mountains on Sept. 28, two UNCG alumni were uniquely positioned to help elementary students who needed it.
Making a remarkable, real-world impact is at the center of UNC Greensboro’s school social work licensure program.
“Our students get lots of touch points throughout the entire bachelor of social work program with volunteering, community service, and then their formal internship,” says associate professor Beth Webb.
Joint program, MSW students, intern at GCSTOP. a nonprofit organization focused on addressing opioid-related deaths in Guilford County. The organization offers a range of services, including post-overdose response, support for individuals involved in the justice system, and community outreach. All services are provided free of charge to participants.
What do you like about your field placement?
I love how hands on I am able to be at GCSTOP. My supervisor really prepares us and trusts us to be in situations where I can do things on my own which is giving me a lot of valuable experience. I also love my placement of GCSTOP in general as we are practicing harm reduction and are able to meet our clients in a different setting than many other agencies
Mental health is as normal a topic as physical health. It needs to be a natural part of (the player’s) day
