Doctorate Program
Information About the Program
ABOUT THE PH.D. IN SOCIAL WORK
North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro offers a Joint Ph.D. in social work program.
PH.D. CURRICULUM
The curriculum encourages exploration of quantitative, qualitative, and community-engaged research methods. Students are also encouraged to use electives to specialize in specific areas. The Ph.D. program, following the teacher/scholar model, prepares students for academic careers and leadership roles in the community.
PH.D. PROGRAM OPTIONS
After completing coursework, students must pass written and oral comprehensive exams and defend their dissertation proposal. Once this is done, they are considered “All But Dissertation” (ABD) and will focus on writing and defending the dissertation while enrolled in dissertation hours to complete the degree.
PH.D. ADMISSIONS
Each student is randomly assigned to one of the two universities for purposes of tuition and fees, registration, financial aid, and access to all fee-based services, including student health services
PH.D. FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES
This directory provides a variety of funding opportunities for Ph.D. students. Since the program only guarantees financial support for the first year (and only for full-time students), it’s important for students to seek out additional funding options.
